I got onto a video about Black Appropriation and that was something I found really interesting and had never thought before, I was struggling to draw visual responses that were relevant but after looking at this video my work started to have more clarity.
I looked into how the media percieves different cultures and translated this into a visual response, i thought it was interesting how something a white female wears is branded as trendy but when the same thing is worn by a black female it is branded as boring or "rachet'.
One of the people mentioned in the youtube video was Madonna and how she draws from the black culture now. I looked into madonna and how her image has changed over the years and how the media once celebrated her but are now beginning to paint her as somewhat pathetic just because she is older now. I also looked into how she started out as quite original and quickly became something that was mass made and mainstream.
When on pinterest I looked into Nina Cosfords work. I liked how she personalised images (taken from the HBO Girls) and made them her own and said something about it at the same time. This is an element I wanted in my own work. I also like the media in which her work is done.
From this I drew a visual response considering how i could change my image and how I have changed it in the past.
I then looked at phillip lights work after I decided I wanted more character in my work and looked at him for some reference. From this I drew a series of strong female actors just to warm up and to think about their representations in the media and how they challenge them.
I looked into other illustrators who also did this and how they did it.
I started to think about my end process. At this time I was thinking about doing a typology or a character diagram not unlike Mikkel Sommers work (see below) but instead of showing a variety of people I wanted to show the variety of people that are downcast by the
the media industry and how the industry picks and chooses who rises to fame and the characteristics you need for that.
